Television has taken over all the authority of people’s lives. A few years ago, for many people television meant something else, it was a sign of development, however now it has become something like an authority and it creates interaction with life.
Television programs also remain among the most important authorities. For example, if there is a dance contest show, the winner might be perceived as the best dancer in the country.
Currently, a show in the United States focuses on art. Bravo TV’s reality show titled “Work of Art: The Next Great Artist” chooses emerging artists and brings them to New York and chooses juries to judge their work and in the end the winner will receive a $100,000 cash prize and a solo show at the Brooklyn Museum, one of the biggest in the U.S.
In each episode, contestants are faced with the challenge of creating unique pieces in a variety of mediums such as painting, sculpture, photography, collage and industrial design.
So the challenge is big and it is hard not only because there are vociferous juries in the show, but also the freedom of self-expression is gone.
Creating an artwork has always been a challenge but creating it in front of people means added pressure. If art means freedom, then where is the freedom in this creation process?
However, according to the show and the creators, “the weekly assignments are exciting, original and will challenge the artists’ to push the limits of their technical skills and creative boundaries.”
According to the producers of the show, this helps to expand the perception of art in United States. But of course, nothing that happens in the United States stays in the United States. Surely this program will expand to the whole world.
Turkey is one of the countries that love to buy the rights to programs from other countries. For example, currently Acun Ilıcalı, a TV program producer, is the authority for Turkish TV competition programs. Ilıcalı buys the rights to big competition programs from all over the world and adapts them for Turkish audiences. As a result, Ilıcalı and producers like him make themselves the authority on many things such as dance, art and food.
Ilıcalı was not able to finish university and he began a career in sport broadcasting in television and as sports writer. Maybe in the future he will also buy the rights to Bravo TV’s art competition and become an authority on art in Turkey without knowing anything about the field.
